GLU is a collective of grad workers fighting for better working conditions at UMD which means you can take part in our fight. We all understand that grad school is busy – but you can still make a difference with just a bit of your time.
Here are ways you can help us win living wages, subsidized health care, fair and enforceable grievance policies, parental leave, better international student support, and more! The more participation we can get from everyone, the more power we can build, and the more we can win!

Organizing Committee
The Organizing Committee is dedicated to engaging with and building collective power among grad workers. We talk about the current organizing status across campus and share resources for successful organizing. We meet weekly on Fridays, 2-3PM! Join our WhatsApp channel or email info@umdgradworkers.org for the meeting info!
We also have college-level and department-level organizing meetings, email to find out what’s going on in your corner of UMD.
Central Committee
The Central Committee is focused on addressing the internal administrative matters of the Union. We discuss union structure, bylaws, amendments, and policies, ensure communication between committees, and organize union elections. Our meetings are biweekly on Mondays, 12-1PM.
International Students Committee
The International Students Committee discusses organizing and building power among international grad workers, including developing actions and issue campaigns to improve the international grad experience at UMD. We meet biweekly on Fridays, 11-12PM
Communications Committee
The Communications Committee develops and implements a comprehensive communications strategy for the Union’s internal and external communications. We create newsletters, social media content, flyers, and coordinate with local/national media outlets. Our meeting times are biweekly, Fridays 9-10AM!
Social Events Committee
The Social Events Committee organizes social opportunities for union members outside of union events, such as game nights, happy hours, and trivia! We currently coordinate over Whatsapp and meet on an ad hoc basis.
Data and Security Working Group
The Data & Security Working Group implements solutions to ensure that GLU’s data is carefully protected but still accessible to the organizers who need it.
Legislative Working Group
The Legislative Working Group collaborates with state representatives in the Maryland House and Senate to enshrine collective bargaining rights for graduate workers across the USM into law. We will be meeting more as the legislative session in early 2025 draws closer – stay tuned! In the meantime, join our channel in the Whatsapp community!
